IIHSA Conn Murphy Memorial travel Scholarship 2025

The Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens (IIHSA) invites applications by students from Irish universities for a new Conn Murphy Memorial Travel Scholarship. The scope of this award is intentionally broad, reflecting Conn’s wide interests and his great love for Greece: it is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students studying any aspect of Greek civilization (e.g. Greek and Roman Civilization, Archaeology, Classics, or cognate subjects) at any Irish University (on the island of Ireland). This scholarship is generously funded by Conn’s family in his memory, and will be offered annually.

Dr Conn Murphy (1970-2008) completed his BA in Greek and Roman Civilisation and English at University College Dublin (1989-92). He later moved to University of Cambridge where he focused on Minoan archaeology,  writing an MPhil thesis on Minoan villa architecture (1995), followed by his PhD on ‘Society, Settlement and Status: Regional Variation in Minoan Neopalatial Architecture’ in 1999 under the supervision of Colin Renfrew. Conn travelled widely in Greece and participated in numerous fieldwork projects on Crete.

Eligibility and Scope
The award of €1000 is intended to cover travel expenses to Greece, accommodation in the Institute’s hostel (or equivalent if travelling outside Athens), and other expenses. The scholarship holder will also be awarded free IIHSA membership for the year, which entitles them to a year’s (free) pass to archaeological sites, museums, and the libraries in Athens.

As noted above, the scope is intentionally broad and is intended to offer the opportunity to a wide range of students to visit Greece. Activities may include - but are not restricted to - research for projects and papers, creative projects, participation in fieldwork, independent travel to see places and museums of specific interest. The scholarship is open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students and it must be used within the calendar year 2025.
