Congratulations to Eleanor Kellett, awarded the first IIHSA Conn Murphy Memorial travel Scholarship (2025)

We are delighted to announce that Eleanor Kellett (UCD Classics) has been awarded the first Conn Murphy Memoral Travel Scholarship. Our congratulations to Eleanor and our warmest thanks to Conn’s family for their generous support in memory of Conn.

Eleanor shares her research plans with us: "As a recipient of the Conn Murphy Memorial Travel Scholarship, I will spend the month of May in Greece based at the IIHSA for my PhD research titled 'Tattooing, Identity, and Autonomy: A Comparative Study of Gender and the Body in the Classical World'. My time in Athens will be spent examining depictions of Thracians in Attic pottery at the National Archaeological Museum, as well as travelling to key sites such as Delphi, Mycenae, and Knossos to examine various artefacts in person. I also look forward to continuing my work at the IIHSA library, where I have conducted thesis research over the past two years."

About the scholarship

The Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens (IIHSA) is delighted to offer annually, from 2025, a new Conn Murphy Memorial Travel Scholarship. The scope of this award is intentionally broad, reflecting Conn’s wide interests and his great love for Greece: it is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students studying any aspect of Greek civilization (e.g. Greek and Roman Civilization, Archaeology, Classics, or cognate subjects) at any Irish University (on the island of Ireland). This scholarship is generously funded by Conn’s family in his memory.
