Jason O’Brien Travel Bursaries & Greek Irish Society Travel Bursary 2025

The Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens (IIHSA) invites applications by students from Irish universities for the 2025 travel bursaries to Greece. Four bursaries are available to the value of €1000 each. The award is intended to cover travel expenses Ireland-Athens return, accommodation in the Institute’s hostel (or equivalent) and expenses for two weeks travel/research in Greece. The bursary recipients will also be awarded free IIHSA membership for the year, which entitles them to a year’s (free) pass to archaeological sites, museums, and the libraries in Athens.

Eligibility:
The Bursaries are open to students studying any aspect of Greek civilization (e.g. Greek and Roman Civilization, Archaeology, Classics) at an Irish University (on the island of Ireland). Eligible students are those undertaking a research project in their final undergraduate year (e.g. thesis or extended essay); working on a masters thesis, or in the earlier stages of a PhD.

Deadline: 17th January 2025 at 6 pm.

Before applying students should ask their supervisor/module coordinator for permission to be away from their institutions for the period of the travel bursary. Applicants should be prepared to travel to Greece from March onwards and up to early June 2025 to ensure availability of a room at the Institute.

Application procedure:
Applications are by email and should include the following:

  1. A short research proposal explaining how a stay in Athens/Greece would be of benefit to the applicant’s research project (maximum 1000 words).

  2. The applicant’s Curriculum Vitae.

In addition, an academic reference should be submitted in a separate email by the student’s research supervisor. The letter should arrive no later than the application deadline. The results will be communicated to the applicants by mid February.
